High School Volunteer Achieves DUI Arrest

I'm sure this one will never make the papers........at least not the local paper with which the defendant is affiliated. However, on the night of April 4th, 2007, a very sour looking Julia Shackelford was arrested while driving one of her luxury SUVs and charged with a DUI. Shackelford, who is a volunteer at Hampshire High School and is known to host various social gatherings for high school students at her home, is also a major contributor to high school athletic programs.

Due to her social status in the community and the track record of the prosecutor's office on these issues, the odds of a reduction of the DUI charge to a simple speeding charge are in her favor. Win or lose, should she still be granted permission from the board of education to volunteer her services as a mentor to our children? If a volunteer were arrested for drug possession or any other crime which would make them an unfit mentor, should they be allowed to continue to serve as a role model for the students? Of course not. A DUI is no different. It is substance abuse. The utter disregard one must have for human life to drink and drive is not a quality to be sought in a mentor for our children.

Are you all including in "the kids she helps" the ones that party at her house with her and that she makes leave(driving drunk-oh or that is okay, right) so they aren't at her property in the morning. Come on is this the kind of role model we want to lead the youth of our area?

People, people, people! What all of you are missing is the example that she should be if she's such a noble super star in the great Hampshire County. I real honest person would not keep the many secrets that she's held, and yes I know some of you are nodding your heads. When you lie, when you cheat, when you sneak around someone will find out, and it may be a little case of karma...or just fate, but this time she got caught. Think about her 2 sons. What example is this to them. Yes, times are hard and sometimes people make mistakes, but hopefully this time she's learned her lesson. To all you people out there, knowing how to be a true example takes honesty and knowing that someone is always watching!

I can't help but wonder why the fine citizens of hampshire county would want to come the defense of a person that would drive after they have been drinking. Why do you feel the need to protect a person that may have injured or killed themselves or others. Let's look at the crime and not the person. Everyone needs to be treated equally. Drink and drive and pay the price. And yes it should be a high one.

I agree with the blogger 100%. Let me ask you Julie supporters a question. If you were to see irrefutable proof of the parties mentioned, would you then be so quick to come to her defense?

why does "luxury" need to be thrown in the article. If it was a crappy car would the article have read "pulled over in her 1987 piece of shit"? WVInsider just trying to gain support from the lower class by bringing status into his article.

To the last commenter:

It's 'WV Informer' not 'WV Insider'....you obviously have a great attention for detail.

The fact of the matter & the entire point of the article is that class is indeed a factor in this case, as was evidenced in the dismissal of the case due to "no just cause for traffic stop". I can count on 2 hands the number of times I've been pulled over, searched, etc. for no just cause. So why even mention "luxury"? He/She has gained my & other's support of both high & low income people simply by demonstrating thru factual events that this woman who can easily afford her fines, is let go with not even a slap on the wrist. Yet others in the same situation are raped to the ultimate extent of the law. It's how the counties & towns around here are weeding out the lower classes.

What a fucking comfortable world you must live in. If you ever had to walk a mile in a normal person's shoes...(shakes head).

Fact:
Cookman & Billmeyer are crooked.....if you're not in the circle that is.

This blog still has me puzzled. This case was dismissed, but yet she is still holding parties at her house where there are numerous underaged kids drinking it up. She was really taught a lesson. They tell everyone not to leave their house drinking to cover their own asses, but I can assure you that there we several who left Sunday night that were drunk. If they got caught I'm sure Mrs. Shackleford would have posted their bail and possibly paid for an attorney to keep their mouths closed about all the alcohol she is purchasing for our local kids.
